Untitled #19 (Pyro) at the Denver Art Museum, Sept 26

11 Sep 08

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) ignites Friday evening with Untitled #19 (Pyro), September 26 from 6 to 10 p.m. Gather with friends to make crafty coffee cozies, witness a molten iron pour and please your inner pyro at the last Untitled event of the 2008 series.

CU Denver’s visual arts department brings the flames to the DAM’s Martin Plaza. Set your eyes ablaze with a live iron pour and sculpture casting. Sculpture students heat the iron to liquefying temperatures and pour into casks. Fire and flames jump as the iron settles into the mold. Pours will happen throughout the evening.

Sign up for Wind Power!

02 Sep 08

We currently get all the electricity used in the common areas of the Boutique Apartment buildings from wind power, instead of from coal. But if you’re currently paying an electric bill directly to Xcel Energy, why not consider helping us reach our goal of being 100% wind-powered, by having your apartment’s electricity come from wind? It’s easy and costs less than 50 cents a month, and the benefits are astounding.

Based on EPA Power Profiler statistics, buying one 100 kWh block of Windsource for a year has the following environmental benefits:

Carbon dioxide avoided: 2,449 lbs.
Miles not driven: 2,400
Trees planted: 1/3 acre

You can sign up easily online at Xcel’s web site, or contact our main office at 303.320.0966 for more information.

Volunteer Recycling Captains Needed, Aug 23-29

18 Aug 08

For any resident who might be interested in volunteering during the DNC, check out this request from the Colorado Association for Recycling:

The Colorado Association for Recycling, in its role as Director of Resource Recovery for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) Host
Committee, is looking for a few good volunteers!

WHEN
We don’t have specific information at this time but we can tell you that volunteers will be needed between Aug 23 and Aug 29 anytime from 8 a.m.
until 10 p.m.  Shifts that late will be rare, typically 7 p.m. would be the latest.

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
We are looking for folks who are able to oversee other volunteers in the resource recovery effort. The DNC has volunteers who will be trained to
man ‘waste stations’ at various locations and runners, who will circulate from station to station ensuring that they are manned, that there are no
problems, and that the recycling and trash make it to the appropriate
central collection location.

The positions we need filled are the team captain positions that will
oversee these other volunteers and be in contact with the volunteer
coordinator as needed. It would entail working one 6 - 8 hour shift,
typically out-of-doors, at one of the many interesting events taking place
during the convention. You would ensure that volunteers get checked in and
out, have what they need to perform their duties and generally supervise
that shift.

TRAINING
There will be an overall training available on Monday, August 18 at 6:00pm
(yes, tonight!) and Saturday, August 23 at 9:00am at Sturm Hall on the
University of Denver campus. We’ll be in the Davis Auditorium on the 2nd
floor.

Sturm Hall is located at 2000 E. Asbury Ave. If you take the lightrail,
it’s directly south of the DU stop, just past the Richie Center.

Here’s a map: http://www.du.edu/maps/index.html

TO HELP
If you think you’d like to help CAFR and the DNC green this convention and
recover as many resources as possible, please contact Marjie Griek at
mgriek@cafr.org or Jack DeBell at debell@colorado.edu.

Recycle Your Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

If you’re a new Boutique Apartments resident, chances are that you received a free compact fluorescent bulb in your welcome basket.

These energy-saving and long-lasting bulbs will (eventually) wear out, and when they do, you
can now drop off used compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and mercury-containing thermostats for free recycling at any Ace Hardware store in the state. The spiral shaped bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and should not be thrown away in the trash.

Last Hat in Town, at Neighborhood Flix, March 18

12 Mar 08

Join the Documentary Cinema Institute as they present a Guest Forum screening of “Last Hat in Town,” with Colorado filmmaker Zachary Fink.

Date: Tuesday, March 18
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Neighborhood Flix Cafe, 2510 E. Colfax (at the intersection of Colfax and Columbine, next to Tattered Cover and behind Twist and Shout)

Cost: $10

Last Hat in Town chronicles the transformation of the Rocky Mountains from wide-open ranch land to a patchwork of natural gas drilling sites. Three very unique men are struggling to find new ways to live in this changing landscape. In an intimately interactive direct-cinema style, Soul Fabric Films tells their stories. The closely observed details of their struggles accumulate to a complex and heart-rending story of the loss of a way of life. It is boom-time in the Rocky Mountains. The rush to extract trillions of cubic feet of natural gas in Colorado has forever altered these romanticized landscapes as well as the people who have lived here for generations.

Need Good Home for Dressers

27 Feb 08

I have two 1940’s dressers that I have will no room for in my storage unit. One is a good size 10, yes, 10 drawer horizontal dresser and one 5 drawer dresser with a built in “secret” compartment with original glass mirror and a cedar lined drawer.

These dressers are perfect for extra storage - they have been a savior in storage-challenged apartments.

I will give them to a fellow BA resident at no cost. The only catch is that you have to move them. I am moving from Shambhala at the end of April, but if you are interested, I’d be more than happy to let them go sooner.

E-mail me at echsentrik@mac.com if you are interested in taking a look at them.

Snow shoveling saint

05 Feb 08

I’ll post a note in our building, but I’d like to thank the kind soul at LaMont who has been shoveling the walks at what must be the crack of dawn.  Even the little path to my car was clear this morning.  grin
I don’t recall this being a service provided by Boutique, so someone in or near our building should definitely get a gold star.

This is the difference between just living in a building....and being part of a community.

Gracias!

Happy Lulu Dog Walking Services

Happy Lulu to You!

Every dog needs at least one walk a day to stay healthy, happy and calm. And every apartment dog needs even more than that. Sadly, our busy work schedules don’t permit us time to give our best friends those brisk mid-day walks they need. According to the National Geographic Channel’s “Dog Whisperer,” Cesar Millan, all good dogs receive three things from their owners: “Exercise, discipline, and affection—in that order.” Daily exercise is the first and most important way to restore your dog to a natural calm state and eliminate stressed behaviors such as chewing, barking or tail chasing. Correcting these behaviors is especially crucial for apartment dwellers. Happy Lulu dog walking services is now filling slots for mornings and afternoons, Monday through Saturday, in Denver’s Capitol Hill and surrounding neighborhoods. Call to meet your Dog Walker and fellow Boutique Apartments Resident, Brea Fisher. Once a bond of trust is formed between Brea and your dog, services can begin immediately. Daily walk is $8 for 25 minutes, paced to the age and size of your dog.
As a special offer to all Boutique Apartment residents, Happy Lulu is offering the first two dog walks free of charge when you sign up for at least three walks a week.
Happy Lulu!  Brea

Re-Use a Shoe

13 Sep 07

Every year, millions of pairs of athletic shoes end up in landfills or are disposed of in some other way. One solution is Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program, where worn-out athletic shoes of any brand are collected, processed and recycled into material used in sports surfaces like basketball courts, tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks and playgrounds for youth around the world.

In Denver, you can drop off your used shoes (they can be any brand) at Niketown at the Downtown Pavilions, at the corner of 16th Street and Glenarm.

Ahoy!

10 Sep 07

Hey there!
My name is megs, and I just moved here to Aperture from my previous place in Ft Collins.  It was a change for me, as I’ve been in Ft C for a little over 8 years where I was attending undergrad and graduate school for Anthropology, and was used to strutting around town and knowing everyone.
But Denver seems like a blast so far, and I’m looking forward to getting into the groove here, and would love to meet people in the buildings!!

I’m trying to get my journalism career off and starting here(having done work for the local papers in Northern CO) and would also like to finish up my PhD in Anthropology some day!

Attention music fans; there’s a new festival in town, and not only will it feature such Indie-favorites as The Flaming Lips and Cake, but it’s also taking an active role in reducing greenhouse gases by implementing a greening program specifically for the festival. Oh and did we mention it’s all happening at Red Rocks, the “Best Live Music Venue in North America”?

For 2 days and 2 nights (September 14 and 15), Red Rocks will feature performances by more than 50 bands, including The Flaming Lips, Cake, Spoon, The Decemberists ... the list goes on. But wait, there’s more! In addition to the main stage at Red Rocks, the organizers have set up 4 smaller club-like stages, for those who like a more intimate setting when seeing a band.

You can buy Single-Day or Two-Day passes, and for those who just can’t get enough, they also offer a VIP Gold Pass.

If you haven’t seen it already, check out Kaffeine Buzz, Denver’s online music and culture magazine. Hats off to Kim Owens, the editor and brains behind the magazine, and a Boutique Apartments resident.

Local Outdoor Pool Schedule

20 Jun 07

As the summer has hit this week, a lot of our residents are asking about community pools. Denver has 16 outdoor pools, but one of the best is right here in the neighborhood, at Congress Park (located at 8th and Josephine). This year, the outdoor pools are open from June 4 - August 18.

Fees are very reasonable; there’s even a 3-month pass for only $37.50 that’s good for any of Denver’s rec centers and pools. That’ll buy a lot of pool time!

Check out the outdoor pool locations, hours and schedules.

11 Jun 07

Last week we delivered a special survey to you, our residents, asking how you think Boutique Apartments is doing. We appreciate how busy you are, so we’ll reward those of you who take the time to fill out the survey with a $5 Starbucks card.

If you did not receive a survey (it was pretty windy last week, so a few may have blown away), please contact Jenny at jthomas@boutiqueapartments.com to have one delivered to you. Thanks again; we really appreciate your feedback.
